![]() When conditions warranted, in the afternoon, we took our ancestors back to sit under the sun. So, when the sun was too hot the elderly were taken back into the huts. ![]() His son, Mlaleo ( photo) lived for 106 years and died in 2014. One of our grandparents, named Siara lived for 115 years. ![]() Though they were not able to walk for long periods they were healthy and of sound mind. Our grandparents’ longevity was over 100 years. If the weather changed, we did what we were instructed to do. When our parents went off to till the land, we were left at home with the responsibility of returning our grandparents to their huts, if the sun was too hot, or if it rained. Growing up under the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, we used to see our parents, in the morning, taking our grandparents outside the house and letting them sit under the morning sun for several hours.
